Foster Care

I have a colleague who I have been working with very closely recently who is a foster mom. I was with her when she got the phone call that a baby was waiting for her in the hospital. I met him a few days later and she told me the story of why he is in foster care. I also observed her as a year or so ago she and her husband adopted a son that they had taken in as a foster child. She generously took the time to share with me the things that she has learned from foster care and her experiences over the past few years with foster children. I also have two sisters-in-law who are social workers and are involved in foster care. In the past few years of dealing with infertility I have developed an interest in foster care, even more than adoption. My conversation with my colleague intrigued me even more. I have started doing research on adoption and foster care and I'm becoming even more drawn to it. I read an article today titled, "Myths and Realities: Adopting Older Children and Children with Special Needs." I absolutely loved it. I recommend it to anyone considering adoption. Here's the link: http://childrenawaitingparents.org/files/chapt8adoption.pdf  If you can recommend any books or articles for me to read, please send them my way! Thank you! We'll see where this road takes us...

  1. Hey Rachel. There are 2 families in my neighborhood that have done quite a bit of foster care. I'm sure they'd be happy to chat with you if you'd like.
